The Things That Flip "Flipper's Friend" Luke Halpin

(Published in the premiere issue of Tiger Beat Magazine, Sep 1965)

You may think that a guy has everything - looks, fame, fortune and the greatest kind of a life since surfing - wouldn't be too swayed by simple, down-to-earth things like mom's home cooking, sight-seeing in his car, or a birthday party (his eighteenth), swarmed over by neighborhood kids. But these things truly flip Luke Halpin.

Luke, fair-haired with greenish blue eyes that can change with the colors of the seas in which he works and plays, is unsophisticated. No star-image stuff for the hard-working "Sandy" of the "Flipper" series, or the sport who dearly loves to spend his leisure hours swimming and fishing the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. He is even seriously thinking of becoming an authority on dolphins.

Aside from his great affection for "Flipper" and her stand-ins, Luke flips over his dog "Whisky", trained to play baseball with his master; Actress Shirley McLaine; dating (no steady yet), the song, "Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man"; the colors burgundy, yellow, blue, and olive, and in cars, the GTO and Jaguar.

Luke's a guy who likes to work when he works, and play
while playing, but let anything interfere on his day to
sleep in, and he's a hard one to handle. Understand?
Luke is as much a television fan as the next guy, and watches
for entertainment, when something captures interest.
Even a turn on the yard detail
Luke doesn't mind, especially
since his side-kick "Whisky"
helps all he can. It doesn't
take long to police the palm
fronds, then sport is free to go
sightseeing in his sports car.

Just as any pet worth his keep, "Whisky"
has a collection of toys, and gets plenty of
attention. This is the prize pooch who
rertrieves the ball for Luke when he is
working out on the local baseball green.
Leading an active life, Luke has
to have plenty of groceries and
mom's cooking just can't be
beat! While routine takes a back
seat, this household likes to
start the day by having this meal
as unit.
You'd think that living and working in the
water would spoil his zest for it, but Luke
even enjoys cleaning out the pool at his
home.
For sharpening mental wits there's nothing
to match a game of monopoly with pop.
The whiz games are welcome relief from
active sports to the guy who spends his
daylight hours in the Gulf.
A simple family with simple tastes the Halpins get a big kick out of visiting the boardwalk on evenings when the young actor
has a day off. It gives them a chance to test Florida "eateries."
If there's anything that flips Luke, it's his fan
mail. With the help of a good buddy, his mom,
actor tries to answer it all. He is usually
successful.
